Community Relations - LLCT...Safety First!
When the Little Lake Cleanup Team (LLCT) prepared for the second year of its PCB dredging on Little Lake Butte des Morts near Menasha, Wis., it turned to Zeppos & Associates to help with communications.

The ultimate goal was to keep the community informed of what was taking place at the lake during dredging season and to ensure that boaters knew how to navigate the waters safely during the project.

The 2005 efforts were a success. The LLCT received positive feedback from the community for its open and honest approach, and media coverage was also favorable. Most importantly, the second season of the project was completed safely and efficiently, indicating that LLCT messages on safety were reaching the key audiences of boaters and lake users. Communication efforts for the 2006 season are now underway.

Marketing Consumer Products or Services - Helping Seniors Navigate Medicare Part D
As WPS Health Insurance prepared to roll out Medicare Part D health plans to senior citizens in Wisconsin, the nonprofit insurer turned to Zeppos & Associates to help reach consumers and communicate key media messages.

Zeppos & Associates helped WPS take the initiative to educate consumers and the media about the program well before the plans were available to the public. In our efforts to help WPS get ahead of the competition, Zeppos & Associates conducted research on how to reach seniors, gauge the level of public knowledge about the program and learn what information was needed. Zeppos & Associates also trained WPS spokespeople and created a media kit that included Frequently Asked Questions, charts and graphs and other key information about the new prescription program.

Combined with aggressive sales and advertising efforts, this public relations campaign helped WPS exceed its enrollment expectations and become the leading Medicare Part D plan provider in the state.

Public Affairs - Preventing a Permanent Splashdown of the USS Des Moines Preserve Our Parks (POP), a community group, needed public affairs assistance to develop a grassroots, communications and media relations campaign to help build opposition to a proposal to permanently dock a retired Navy battleship on the shore of Lake Michigan. Zeppos & Associates was brought in to develop and implement a strategic campaign.

POP did not want Milwaukee's lakefront to become home to the USS Des Moines ship museum. The group was concerned about the ship's massive size, future maintenance costs and the impact the ship would have on traffic congestion, lakefront views, access to nearby parks and more. Zeppos & Associates developed and executed a strategic public affairs plan that included a news conference, public hearing, media outreach and efforts to generate broad-based opposition.

As a result of the public affairs campaign, more than 900 citizens attended the key public hearing to express their views against the berthing of the USS Des Moines on Milwaukee' s lakefront. In the end, the County Commission with jurisdiction on the issue unanimously voted to reject the proposal.

Public Affairs - Generating Support for Kenosha Casino
As the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin was preparing for the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) public hearing regarding its proposed $808 million entertainment center and casino in Kenosha, Wis., the Tribe and its partners asked Zeppos & Associates for assistance to help communicate the community' s approval of and support for this project.

The goal was to demonstrate widespread local support, highlight the benefits that Southeastern Wisconsin will gain and generate positive local media coverage. Zeppos & Associates developed and executed a strategic public affairs plan that included grassroots organizing, a strategic direct mail effort, targeted outreach to community leaders and other proactive media efforts.

These efforts had a significant impact on the hearing' s outcome. More than 400 project supporters appeared at the hearing, outnumbering opponents 4-1. Success was further reflected by the diverse group of speakers that included elected officials, local residents, union members, leadership of the local NAACP and Hispanic groups, business leaders, teachers, parents and others. As a result, when the BIA reviews the final casino proposal, it will find in the record a solid base of community support that was made even stronger by the strategic public affairs and communication efforts surrounding this public hearing.

Special Events - Starting A New Era at America' s Legendary Oval Mile
When Milwaukee Mile Holdings LLC, a group led by two business leaders with local roots, was selected to promote and operate The Milwaukee Mile speedway, it turned to Zeppos & Associates to help plan the announcement of the new leadership team.

To celebrate and help build community support, our firm helped organize a VIP breakfast ceremony and news conference during which the new promoters signed documents that formally transferred track operations. The new management group also used the event to publicly introduce its investors, including a number of well-known, high-profile community leaders and former Green Bay Packer star Gilbert Brown. The event setting included an Indy car and a NASCAR show car, historic Milwaukee Mile photos and a pictorial timeline detailing a century of racing at America' s legendary oval. Miscellaneous - Taking Wisconsin's Cranberry Tradition National
For the past 12 years, the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association (WSCGA) has asked Zeppos & Associates for help in promoting its annual fall harvest.

In 2005, the goal of the effort was to achieve national media coverage on Wisconsin cranberries and growers. Zeppos & Associates developed a strategic plan that focused on three key efforts, including a satellite media tour featuring holiday meal ideas using cranberries. The plan also included the national promotion of the new state-of-the-art harvest technology known as the Ruby Slipper, and it also seized the opportunity to announce that Wisconsin would yield the largest cranberry crop in the state's history. In an effort to reach WSCGA's goal, our firm focused on increasing awareness about the health benefits of cranberries, aimed national messages on the topic of different ways to use fresh berries and heightened attention to Wisconsin's status as the country's No. 1 cranberry producer.

The results of Zeppos & Associates' efforts far exceeded the client's expectations for 2005 and generated a significant amount of national print, radio and television coverage. Overall, the satellite media tour generated more than 120 segments in 56 different television markets. In addition, 31 print stories regarding the Ruby Slipper and more than 30 stories relating to Wisconsin being the top cranberry producing state were confirmed.
